(mini) Weight Loss Academy – Episode 1: Know Your ‘Why To Live Through The ‘How’

We’re taught from a young age that we can have anything we want in life if we work hard. But have you ever felt like you work hard to lose weight and keep it off, but no matter what you do, it’s just doesn’t work?

Do you give up and tell yourself that you’re a failure? That there’s no longer a point in trying? That life’s ‘OK’ at the moment, so you shouldn’t complain?

Well, the good news is, you’re not alone (roughly 98% of people fail at weight loss). But the truth of the matter is, you’re selling yourself short. And if you ever stop to really listen to what your body is truly telling you - and why every couple of weeks or months you get down about your current picture - the answer is in this video.

The following is a transcript:

There were things I never tasted growing up, like health.

In our house, if I didn’t eat everything on my plate, it was disrespectful.

When I got into the real world, I was like a man at the buffet bar and I needed to eat everything.

Then, I got to travel around the world discussing transformation with organisations and tasting deliciousness in those lands.

I went to Korea, Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Mexico, Singapore, and Malaysia and I got to eat everything, but I didn’t yet understand the keys to transforming my own health.

The world is a delicious and amazing place when we travel and eat amazing food, but my excess weight got in the way of the true adventure of travel.

I’m Oscar Chavez and in this five-part series, I'm saying to you,

I am going to teach you to lose weight and keep it off which is the hardest part. I’m going to talk to you about the things that no one has ever talked to you about before and some of this stuff might make you feel a little bit sensitive.

So let me ask you a question, do you want the red pill or the blue pill?

Welcome to episode number one. Today’s episode is called ‘Understand Your Why’

Let me just be really clear, weight loss is probably the hardest thing that you will have ever have to do.

Friedrich Nitzsche says “If you can understand any why, then you can live any how’.

They’re very profound words.

See, what happens when you set up a vision or goal, is you walk towards that vision or goal, and stuff is going to come up against you.

See, some of the obstacles are going to be small obstacles, and some of them are going to be huge obstacles.

For instance, you’re at your mum's house and she correlates how much you eat with how much you love her and then you start feeling guilty.

Like, how are you going to deal with that? How are you going to cope with that pressure?

Well, let's say someone comes into your workplace and they’re bringing cupcakes and you’re like ‘Nah, I don’t really want that cupcake’. But then you’re like ‘Oh, I really want that cupcake’. And then, you’re like ‘Okay, well, I’ll just have one cupcake because I was pretty good yesterday'.

So then you have the one cupcake. What's going to stop you from eating the second cupcake, or the third cupcake, because you’ve already had one cupcake, so you may as well eat the second one? And the third one?

So, just because you ate one, you might as well eat three, and that's the mindset that got you to exactly where you are today.

This isn’t a joke, you literally have a little devil on your shoulder saying ‘Come on, eat that. You know you want that. You know you love that. Come on, it tastes amazing. You should eat that. You’ve been pretty healthy. Come on, you want to eat that. You should eat that.’

And that's what’s going on constantly over and over and over and over again, every single day for the rest of your life. Like, how are you going to deal with that?

So, you’re either going to listen to the voice or you’re going to ignore it. But even if you ignore it, it doesn’t mean it's not going to poke you and poke you and poke you and poke you until you give up.

And guess what, you will give up. 100%, you will give up. At some point, you are going to give up and you’re going to listen to that voice and you’re going to cave in.

And then how do you recover from that?

So understanding that there is a probability that weight loss is going to be the hardest thing you’ve ever had to achieve in your life, you’re going to have to understand your reasons for wanting to lose weight, and that’s the why.

And if weight loss isn’t the hardest thing that you’ve ever had to do in your life then that means you’re probably really successful at least one other area in your life.

So if you just apply the principles of success to your excess weight, then you’re already ahead of the pack.

But unfortunately, most people are not ahead of the pack because either a) You’re more likely to have access to fast food than fresh produce in terms of proximity to your house, or b) You believe the lie that junk food is more expensive than healthy food and it’s absolutely not, you just don’t have a firm grip on your expenses and you haven’t looked at it to determine whether it’s true or not and you’re just buying into the excuses that most of the people tell themselves to justify their failures.

And Barack Obama says, 'Excuses are the tools of the incompetent, used by people to build bridges to nowhere and monuments of nothingness’.

So, chances are, if you’re watching this, then you’re in the middle of the pack and you haven’t had any great successes in anywhere of your life.

And you’re in a world of pain, but you need to understand that you’re creating even more pain for yourself by not fixing up the habits that lead you to where you are today.

You see, weight loss is no different to success. If you just apply the habits daily on a consistent basis with discipline, then you actually get to your results, and that's it. That's just success in a nutshell.

You see, weight loss is no different to success. If you just apply the habits daily on a consistent basis with discipline, then you actually get to your results, and that's it. That's just success in a nutshell.

And I mean, there are a whole bunch of other things that you have to get right underneath that, but that's the foundational pillar.

I spent years, and years and years of my life in like, doctors offices and dietitians offices, and they kept saying to me — you should get lap-band surgery, you should get lap-band surgery.

And then, one of the doctors said to me, 'If you don’t get lap-band surgery, you’re not going to live to see your daughters kids' and I was like no F****** wayyyyyyyyy.

Zero chance I’m giving my personal power to someone else. I’m responsible and accountable for my own actions, and I'm not giving the power to obesity to say that I can’t be there. To say that I'm not good enough to control it.

And so I went on a pilgrimage, let's say, to determine what the key was to be able to lose weight and keep it off.

So understand your why — and I’m not talking about superficial crap like ‘oh, I want to feel better in this dress’ or like 'oh I want to be a size smaller’ I’m not talking about that stuff, I’m talking about stuff like,

‘I feel miserable. I can’t look at myself in the mirror and if I continue down this road, then I'm going to end up depressed miserable and sad. On top of this, I won’t live a meaningful and fulfilling life.'

And now this might seem extreme to you, but if this was extreme, then why did people tell me every single day, people that I helped, tell me 'I hate myself because I can’t walk with my kids anymore'.

'I feel like I’m missing out because I’m not able to do things with my family that they want to do, like long walks or long hikes'.

Why are people opening up to me and telling me they just don’t feel attractive anymore, that they feel self-conscious, that they feel nervous in public. That when they run across the road because the light is about to run out, that they feel nervous about their jiggly bits shaking in front of everybody.

I hear this stuff every single day.

So you may say I’m being a little bit extreme here, but I have conversations like this every single day.

And, not to mention that I’ve lived through it first hand. I know every single thing that you think about in here and know every single excuse you’re making to yourself, because I’ve personally lived through it.

So the key lesson here is to understand your why. Let's get a bit deeper and let's do this exercise together.

If you were to die tomorrow, how would people remember you?

Choose three words. Go. Think about it.

Okay, and question number two that you’re going to ask yourself – If I was to die tomorrow, how would I want people to remember me?

My personal philosophy is, live life as if it was your last day, but prepare to live tomorrow.

That’s my saying. That’s what I made up. Amazing, isn’t it?

And each day that I live on this earth, I just want to be a little bit healthier than I was yesterday because there are no upper limits on health. Like there are people that climb Mt Everest.

Like, I can’t do that. And so, each day I want to be healthier.

Disclaimer, disclaimer, disclaimer, oh my gosh, disclaimer.

I have cheese and wine every Friday night because I love it and you’re not going to stop me from doing that, because I do love unhealthy food because it’s delicious.

Like, that’s why all the world eat unhealthy food – because it damn tastes good.

But at the end of the day, I just want a more fulfilling life. I want to live a life of intention because a life of obesity isn’t intentional. It’s not an intentional life and I know this because I’ve been there.

Obesity isn’t an accidental occurrence and we’re going to talk a lot more about this in episode number 2.

And so guys, this five-part course is all about how to overcome yourself.
